We just started the new semester at school. I have had over two decades of new semesters. And each time I enjoy the fresh start of it all.
Maybe that is one of the reasons I keep teaching. That ability to begin again again:
Start a new grade book, start a new Google Classroom, start a new unit, and start a new classroom routine.
I also marked another birthday last month and I feel a renewed sense of purpose entering my new year. There are some birthdays when I feel anxious about getting older and worried about running out of time to accomplish all that I want to achieve.
This year I felt proud of where I am at in my life. Perhaps that’s a product of getting older or perhaps an indication that I am on the right course in my life.
I am definitely concerned about the upcoming 2024 election but I do feel optimistic about what I am seeing in communities of women, including my feminist club, The Feminist Eagles, as well as my daily interactions with women. I wrote about this in a recent Instagram caption, but I wanted to share it here as well.
I am at a stage where women supporting other women is in and friends hearting each and every one of each other’s wins & posts is in whereas calling it cringe when women post about themselves and celebrate themselves is out and women seeing other women as competition is out. I sense that the attacks on our bodily autonomy from politicians and governments is heightening our realization that we must strengthen our female community. I also think that women are slowly realizing that if we are going to shed ourselves of misogyny - both external and internalized - and change the way that men treat us, we must no longer see each other as competition but as sisters in arms to create a more equitable society. By the way, we eagerly invite all men into this mission!
Speaking of people coming together, I HIGHLY recommend this new documentary
It is about the collective power of people, in this case the greatest music stars of the 1980s, coming together to address a global crisis. We are sorely missing this sense of world community today. Perhaps this documentary will inspire us to get back to a place with less division and more unity.
I also wanted to share that Little Miss Marxist and I launched our podcast on YouTube:
and here is the teacher appreciation PBS NewsHour Classroom Episode with my dear friend and most famous voice actress in the world, Tara Strong
I am also excited to announced that I launched a History Lesson Series with Share My Lesson/American Federation of Teachers. I have a new video coming out this week!
Thank you for reading and thank you for you continued support of all my posts and projects.
Have a great week!
Happy start to the semester - the ps and vps I teach need all the yous on their teams!
There is another greatest voice actress in the world named Grey DeLisle and she's my friend. (I do adore Tara though even if we are having minor issues)
